Autumn is in the air, floating to the ground in vibrant colors that crunch beneath my rain boots. This is my favorite time of year to dive into a new stack of books.
This same season, last year, I was massively pregnant and mostly bedridden. I was hungry for a really rich spiritual memoir (my favorite!) and my cousin slipped this book into my tote. I read it in three days! That definitely sets the record of "Fastest Lily's Ever Read a Book as a Busy Mom."
In my Protestant upbringing, using the word "saint" in discussion was frowned upon because it belonged to "those Catholics." A saint was a dead Catholic, or so I was told. I can see now the offensive error, and also that I missed out on learning about my incredibly rich heritage of faith because of semantics, always dripping with contempt.
It is my belief that when you believe in your heart and confess with your mouth that Jesus is the Christ, you are saved. The identity Christ secured for you on the Cross was saint.
Not sinner, saint.
You are scandalously made right with Him. You now have the privilege of learning to walk in that new identity, away from sin and closer to God's heart. It is your choice, but it is He who empowers you to walk in the righteousness you choose. In my experience, so many Protestants can't even bring themselves to believe such a truth, much less study, venerate, or have conversations about sainthood. I wish to see that changed.
This book was a wonderful written story of multiple heroines of our faith, and how their examples drew the author closer to Jesus through her suffering, wandering, and questioning. I highly recommend it if you are looking for a quicker read. One that will warm your heart, challenge your thinking on topics like femininity, womanhood, theology, and religion. My favorite type of book is one that tells someone's life story, and this was a treasure to read!
