I have never been one for audio books; I have always loved reading physical books. My love of reading is equal parts interest in whatever content I’m consuming, as much as it’s simply the pleasure of slowing down, getting comfy, and turning the pages!
This book had been on my radar for a while, but I couldn’t snag a copy from my local library in a timely fashion. Clearly, other mama’s were interested too! And then I friend told me about Libby, an app that allows you to reserve audiobooks for free! I still had to wait in line, which seems quite silly to me (I mean, waiting in line for an audiobook?!) but I can’t complain since it was free!
The audiobook file came to me during the height of my war against laundry. No matter what advice I seemed to read, or try to implement, an effective routine was not sticking. So I found myself quite literally sitting amongst mountains of laundry every night, armed with an evening snack and this audiobook!
It was a delight!
I had never listened to an audiobook that was read by the author before, but Abbie Halberstadt’s reading of her book “M is for Mama” became the soundtrack to my evenings and I realized I quite liked the experience! It’s very special to hear a book written exactly as the author intended, with the added richness of her varying inflections and tones!
This book was circulating rapidly, and growing in popularity, so the rebel in me naturally resisted reading it, initially. Try as I might to follow the crowd, I’ve always been a bit of a maverick. But I’m glad I finally decided to give it a chance, because it was worth the hype! Did I mention the subtitle of the book is “A Rebellion Against Mediocre Motherhood”?!
That sealed the deal for me. I needed to check this one out.
As a “bible-believing mother of 10” Abbie is a wealth of wisdom when it comes to raising children. My favorite aspect of this book was the amount of scripture it contained. Modern parenting philosophies sound good, in theory, but as a devout Gentle Parent for almost two years, I can attest that no roadmaps to motherhood and child rearing hold up. They’re all missing the mark, in one way or another. So while Abbie’s book is not another Christianized attempt at making motherhood a formula, this book IS a beacon of light amidst a noisy market of parenting books. It IS a book full of scriptural wisdom with ACTUAL applications that you can implement. No fluff, no fuss, no legalism. I highly recommend this book to all Christian mamas, and even to fellow mamas who don’t hold to a faith, but are interested in seeing a picture of what faith-filled motherhood can look like!
I liked it so much, my husband got me physical copy of the book, so I could revisit its wisdom as needed! This also means I can lend it out, so let me know if you’re interested in borrowing it from me!
And in case you’re wondering, I may or may not have finally found a laundry system that works for us! But that’s another story, for another day.
